Oh gee whiz!

Shelley, my dear pal, has tagged me. I’m supposed to list 5 weird habits. I’m not going to tag anyone else, but feel free to do a you-you.

My Weirdo Meme, by Jayleigh

1. Upon entering my home from work, church, shopping, whatever, I have only minutes before my rings, earrings and other jewelry shall be removed. I guess I just don’t want to get it dirty or break it. Not that I’m hard on my jewelry… I mean, I wear it to work, right? Anyway, my rings go on my “ring thing” and my earrings in a pink glittery tackle-box type jig. And then I feel like I can “get down to business” and cook, or wipe down toilets, or whatever.

2. I change my socks/undergarments several times per day, especially in the summer. I simply cannot abide by sweaty smelling undergarments. No Rob, my darling husband, not even to wear to bed. Not even if I haven’t showered. And though I might wear “purties” underneath my clothes at work, at home, I wear granny-comfortables. I think my honey’s learned to deal with this. I don’t like my shorts ridin’ high when I’m watching TV.

3. Butter in the goulash. I’m not sure what you all consider to be “goulash” but here in Mid-Michigan, it’s tomato, elbow macaroni, and burger. You can put your own spin on it, but those are the main components. Usually I brown the ground beef with onions and a little Italian seasoning, add the cooked mac and diced tomatoes until it “looks good”.

When I was a child, my parents served bread and butter with everything, or else crackers and butter. Have you ever had a Ritz cracker with BUTTER on it? Mmmmm. So when I was a child, I’d stick the buttered crackers on top of the bowl of goulash.

See, Wednesday was goulash night. Wednesday was Piano Lessons for Dotty and me, and my mom wanted something easy to cook, so we had it EVERY Wednesday for at least 3 years. Also, my mom was tired from a long day of doing all those thankless things that Moms do. Laundry, dishes, cooking, bringing cupcakes to school on my birthday, you know those kinds of things.

And when mom was tired and just wanted to hang out with Dad for her allotted time of 3 seconds daily without one of the three of us badgering them to death (it was usually me), she’d let us eat goulash in front of the TV. She hated the avacado green sculptured carpet that her father-in-law picked out (without her permission) because it was CHEAP and that she lived with for over 30 years. (God bless her heart!)

En route to the Living Room, the butter melted off the crackers and onto the goulash, and so as a grown-up, I skip the crackers and just put a pat or two of butter in my goulash. If I’m feeling frisky, I might put butter in my chili too.

4. I like to wear Rob’s slippers around the house. I have at least 3 pairs, but I would rather wear his. He doesn’t know this, but I wear his slippers because he always puts them in the same place… and I can rarely keep track of mine. I think I am not going to alert him to this post being finished because he may start hiding them on me.

5. I ofter eat dinner for breafast. I don’t like breakfast food much. I’d so much rather eat broccoli and cauliflower with cheese and a Hamburger on a bun for breakfast than, say, a bowl of instant cream o’ wheats. *shudder* You could not PAY me to eat a poached egg, but give me last night’s lasagna and I’m in breakfast heaven. Nachos, refried beans with cheese and onion, french onion soup, steak, turkey and stuffing… bring it on, brothah… just don’t serve me oatmeal.

OK I’ll eat oatmeal if I must. And when Mindy lived with us, I often ate breakfast food with her AT the kitchen table (that’s another thing, I hate eating at the table unless Mindy or CJ is with us). She knows of my oddity, so she was always taken aback and loved talking to me about what I would or would not eat for breakfast.

Wasn’t that fun? I think I am going to send my mom a copy about the goulash. She’ll laugh.

Thanks for sharing all that Jayleigh :o) You’re a sweetheart for doing it ;o)

Regarding the goulash thing…we have never called it that. From the way you describe it, we’ve had it but have always just called it “hamburg macaroni” or something like that…

It’s nearly 11pm and I’m getting hungry now reading and talking about food…lol

  2. Kerri Says:

hahaha, Jayleigh! When I clicked your link the last thing I expected was to end up back at my own blog!

I eat cream of wheat when I’m lazy to cook breakfast. I keep it on hand mainly because my girls love the stuff…but only if they can put it on their toast (how weird is that?!).

I was already tagged for this and posted it a few days ago.

Hope you’re having a great weekend! *hugs*

  3. Jayne Says:

I’m just the opposite. I would rather eat breakfast foods for dinner! There is something about eggs and toast for dinner. Not like it’s prepared any differently, but it just tastes better…and with that, I think I just made myself hungry!

    Found you via Bill’s blog.

  4. Joyce Says:

I can eat breakfast anytime of the day!!!!

That sounds like the goulash we always made. And I do remember eating butter on crackers–but it was usually saltines. And sometimes it was butter and honey stirred together. Yummmmm. Haven’t had that or even thought about that in years!!! This was a fun post.

    *hugs*

    ahahahahahaah

Goulash was one of the first things mom insisted I learn to make. I however…did not like tomato chunks…so as a middle schooler…I discovered if I put the tomatos in the blender…it was much better. And we always made it in the same dish.

    Neal refuses to eat goulash.

But this post made me laugh out loud…even Addy came up and said…what are you laughing at?

  6. Jessica Says:

This was a great read, thanks! We, too, would call that Hamburger Macaroni, vs. Goulash. My dad was born & raised in Germany, so we usually grew up having authentic Goulash. Your mom sounds like an amazing woman to live with carpet that she hated for 30 years. :)
Bill, my husband, also always knows where his shoes are, and he hates when I borrow his to go outside, because I can’t seem to find mine. lol

Oh, found you through Bill, as well :o)

    Thanks for the witty read!
    -Jes

  7. Amstaff Mom Says:

I used to dip oyster crackers into the butter when I was a kid. I LOVED that. Good grief, my saturated fats were HIGH back then.

Now you’ve made me hungry for macaroni & tomatoes, and I was eating oatmeal as I read your post.

I’m with you, give me nachos, tacos, mashed potatoes, whatever for breakfast over pancakes and toast. Or other breakfast foods.

  8. NEO Says:

Jay -Hmmmmm…. I always read a blog about food when I skip lunch. Thanks. ;)
Pass some of those crackers this way eh?

    Peace & Hugs,

    - Neo

  9. Jennifer Says:

What you call goulosh…I call Mulligan. :)

    mmmmm crackers with butter.

  10. David Says:

off topic - I got yelled at for nothing today and walked off my job. Im waiting for my “best friend” to apologize, but im not sure I am in the mood to hear it.
how many times will she say her hormones are imbalanced. I should have taken the day off. Harumpfffff

    Great blog! Fun facts!
My daughters love non-breakfast food for breakfast. At first it bothered me, thinking they should be eating ‘vitamin enriched’ cereal and then I started to hear of others who preferred pizza, grilled cheese, sidekicks, etc. for breakfast and have since lightened up. At least they are eating before they head off to school!
