Rob and Jayleigh Part I

Jayleigh and Rob's First Date on February 20, 1988 This was Rob’s and my first date, back on February 20, 1988. I remember the date because when I got home that night, I asked my sister when the next time was that February 20 was on a Saturday. In her sleepy stupor, she said, “1993, why?”

I said, “That is the day I will marry Rob.”

I wore a white rabbit fur that my mom had when she went to prom and it smelled like Rob’s cologne (because of COURSE we snuggled and kissed a little on the way home from the dance)… for a week afterward, I’d sneak off when I was supposed to be doing chores and I’d go up into my closet and breathe in Rob’s cologne from that fur wrap.

Something else interesting, I don’t believe you can see the crystal jewelry I am wearing in this photo, but I wore the same set with my wedding dress. It was my mom’s that she wore with her wedding dress, and my dad’s mom’s before that. I love family heirlooms!

Roscoe P. Coaltrain

Yesterday Rob and I were talking about when was the first time we fell in love with the other… I said that December before the Snow Ball. On Christmas Break, he called and asked if I could come skating on the lake with him after church. He was so nervous and also he was a friend of my brother’s so James gave him a little heck and gave me A LOT of heck. Rob kept petting our old dog Roscoe.

By the way, if anyone thinks they have the best dog ever, you don’t. Because Roscoe P. Coaltrain was the best dog ever born. Kodiak is a nice doggy. You know I love him so much. But Roscoe was the most amazing dog a kid could love. Please don’t argue about this because you won’t win. :-)

Anyway, we went ice skating and Rob cleared snow off a little section. It was “ok” but I wanted to skate all over the lake. How AWESOME to be able to SKATE ACROSS THE LAKE!!!!! But I got a little scared when Rob said there might be ice-fishing holes and I could punch through… so I stopped trying to go across the whole lake.

Some time in there, I slipped and fell. Rob came to help me up and I threw a snowball and hit his chin. He smiled that beautiful smile that lights up the whole world. He tried to help me up a second time and I pulled him down on the ice next to me. And that’s when I knew my heart wanted to be with him forever and ever and ever.

He said he fell in love with me on that same day a little later. He was cooking a frozen pizza for us and he wanted to play cards with me. I told him I only knew how to play “War” (which if you don’t know, is the most SIMPLE of card games). He thought that was super sweet (I was a month away from being 15, so I WAS super sweet!) and he couldn’t stand it anymore. He wanted to be my MAN!! *giggling*

I had stolen my brother’s off-white shaker sweater that day and my sister’s light blue jeans with the zippers at the ankles. I had on a pink turtleneck and Rob’s mom commented that my earrings and t-neck matched. That’s when SHE fell in love with me.

Rob’s in bed, and has been for an hour. I guess I need to get there too… but I needed to share this. Because …. I just did. I love Rob so much. And I love God even more for giving me this wonderful man and helping us to stick with it for EIGHTEEN years. Wow.
GOD IS GOOD!!!

I have two pugs…don’t they count?

EDIT: JOE!!! I said not to argue! Your cute little pugsies can be in the top 10 of all dogs ever living. Roscoe P. Coaltrain, however, is numero uno. At least to me. ;-)

you were 14!!!! that is incredible, wow. i thought i was gonna marry the guy i was in love with at 14, but obviously, that didn’t work out!!

EDIT: Beth, somehow I just knew that this was it. We were never on again off again… stuff happened… stuff ALWAYS happens, but we wanted to be together. It was a mutual thing and Rob always respected me. Sometimes too much. hehe

Part of what kept me with him after he went to college and I was still in HS was that my parents hated him! So being the rebellious teenager, I stayed with him. And after HS, we got back on track again and fell in love all over again. We had been married 2 years when my dad had a heart attack and triple bypass. Rob was the one who sat with my mom at the hospital day and night. I had started a new job and couldn’t be there like I wanted to be… but after that, my mom and dad fell in love with Rob… I swear they like him more than they do me sometimes. ;-)

And if you ask them, they don’t even remember not liking him.

Roscoe P. Coletrain!!! I haven’t heard that name for years.

What an awesome story, Jayleigh. You’re such a sentimental gal. I love that about you! That, and your courage to show pictures of yourself in 1980’s regalia. :D

EDIT: Um. Regalia? Are you trying to say something Jen? Because, like, this is SIMILAR to what Rob and I looked like back then… we just… um… do our hair the same and put on the same clothes on our anniversary. Yeah. That’s it.

    hehehehe

I can’t seem to find your email address anywhere to ask you but I have a friend who needs (because of her health issues - she’s struggling with congestive heart failure often and can’t walk him) to give her dog away.. He (Max is his name) about 2-3 I think… He’s GREAT dog - a golden lab, something mixed. Looks like a golden though… He LOVES kids and is GREAT with kids - lets them love on him and everything.. He’s mainly indoors type dog and the owner is just crushed she has to give him away so she’s very particular about where he goes… We haven’t found anyone here that would do - but I thought of you this morning…. Especially if you have to put one down soon.. Would you be interested???
