On Naming My House

I’m 3/4 the way through Emma, by Jane Austen.

The movie, starring Gwyneth Paltrow will be on PBS the evening of March 23, btw.

In it, most of the nicer homes have names, such as Emma Woodhouse’s “Hartfield,” Mr. Knightley’s “Donwell Abbey,” and Mr. & Mrs. Weston’s “Randalls.”

I so love the idea of naming homes. Even on Dallas, their home was named “Southfork,” and on Gone With the Wind, it was “Tara.” So in the same spirit, I want to name my house.

I live on Blackstock Road, and we usually refer to our home as such. But there are many houses on Blackstock Road, and so naming our little abode would maybe differentiate it from say, Rick and Teener’s neon pink house directly next door.

Here’s a list. Tell me what you think.

Maple Glen. (there’s a gorgeous Maple in the middle of the front yard, with no trees around it)

Pinewood. (the south and west sides of the yard and marked by thick rows of pines)

Bluebell. (my home is pale blue with dark blue trimmings)

Mossy Hill. (moss on the hill)

OK I’m taking votes.

I think I Like Maple Glen! Grand Idea

I like Maple Glen, too. Or Mossy Hill. Do you have a mossy hill, or do you just like that name? Bluebell may not work if you ever re-paint your house. In any case, MG is my fave.

Maple Glen was my favourite too. However what does glen mean?

  4. Jen Says:

A glen is a valley, typically one that is long, deep, and often glacially U-shaped; or one with a watercourse running through such a valley

    I like Bluebell! :)

Glen also implies a forest (to me at least) I wouldn’t name in anything Glen unless you had a lot of trees or your property actually was in a glen.

maybe Pine Glen? I like pinewood too.

Oooh. I like them all. Maple Glen is beautiful. I’ve always wanted to name my first house! I’ve been tossing up ideas for years.
Our first apartment was christened the Murray’s Sugar Shack. Hehe.
